Ben Smith made the trek up to Cumbria for the Montane Lakeland 50 mile ultra trail race through the Lake District, finishing in the top hundred in under eleven hours.
A week later somewhat flatter terrain saw Harborough AC’s two-year adventure in Division 5 of the Midlands Track & Field League come to an end at Stourport with relegation, despite wins on the day for team managers Tom Ward (3,000m steeplechase) and Lianne Brooks (pole vault). A team weakened by holiday season absences saw veterans Dave Ward (400m and 4x400m relay) and Will Clapp (400m and 800m) take to the track for their first senior track outings of the season.
Reflecting on the campaign Clapp said: “Twenty of our athletes have competed in the league on one or more occasions this year. Whilst the results haven’t always gone our way they would all I think say that they’ve enjoyed the opportunity to compete in a friendly environment. Hopefully our stay in Division 6 won’t be too long if we can get our best athletes out next season. It’s easier than running fifty miles across Cumbria for sure – well done to Ben for his efforts there!”
