Masters of the Midlands!
On Sunday 24th January, two of Harborough ACís most dedicated and consistent performers Ė Karen Brooks and Rick Brown Ė contested the annual Midland Masters Cross Country Championships, at Droitwich Spa. The town, most notable for its huge salt mining deposits, proffered a quintessentially winter morning, with the early underfoot frost yielding soft and muddy conditions across the fields and woodlands that traced the course. Bathed in bright sunshine, the event saw both the Menís and Womenís races setting off together for the first 400m, before separating out Ė the women covering a 6km route, and the men an additional 2km.
In the Menís race, Brown showed that he had fully shaken off any lingering ill-effects of his recent extended injury lay-off, coming home 37th overall, and a splendid third in the Vet55 age category.
In the Womenís competition, Brooks went one better, taking a well-deserved silver medal in the Vet50 section, and sixth overall.
The achievements of both runners marks an excellent conclusion to the bulk of the Cross Country season, and augers very well for the forth coming road equivalent, with further success beckoning.
