Running by Numbers!
Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13; yet it was a band of this number that made the sojourn to the Warwickshire town of Royal Leamington Spa for the 2011 Midland Cross Country Championships to represent Harborough AC.
In around the regal setting, the crowning glory for the Harborough contingent was proffered in the Under13 Boy’s 3km race, where Sam Edwards produced a gutsy display to cross the finish line in 21st place (in a time of 13:10), from a field of over one hundred entrants. In doing so, Edwards gave the Club it’s highest-placed finish across all age categories in the Championships since 2008. Also over the 3km course – in the Under13 Girl’s race – Martha Clapp gave a combative performance for 39th place in a field of 115, coming home in a time of 14:52. In the Under17 Women’s 5km race, Emily Taylor continued her excellent start to the season, placing 33rd in a time of 25:36, securing a top-half finish; while Jake Watson gave a determined run for 75th position in 28:47 in the Under17 Men’s event.
Continuing the progression of representation; Sarah Ward came 32nd in the Under20 Women’s 5km race (30:56), and Matt Driver took 51st in the Under20 Men’s 8km equivalent (with 36:35). In the senior ranks, both Hannah Eveleigh and Sean Fenwick marked their respective returns to active competition in style; Hannah securing 57th place in the 8km event (38:53), and Sean taking 61st in the more arduous 12km (44:45). In a race of some 180 finishers, Hannah was followed home by Marise Taylor (169th, in 52:45) and Lin Farrow (178th, in 55:44). In the aforementioned Senior Men’s race, Adam Brooks was second for the Club, with a 51:38 clocking for 168th, with Dave Waddington in 183rd (52:37), and Graeme Rolfe a little further adrift in 217th (55:47) – all from a total entrance of 299 runners.
Overseeing the day’s proceedings was the Club’s Cross Country Captain, Will Clapp: “All-in-all, today was a pretty good day’s showing for the Club yet again, and Sam’s run was particularly good to see. He’s progressing really well, and took over a minute and a half off his time from a couple of weeks ago in the County event. He’s definitely one for the future!”
Elsewhere, it was the reassuringly hard tarmac, and cool but cooperative climate of the Ashby 5 that awaited ten be-strident Club athletes on Sunday, for the second race in the 2011 Leicestershire Road Running League’s Winter Series. From a collective field of over 450 runners, top plaudits should be reserved for Hazel Buswell, who took 76th position in the women’s event. She was tracked all the way by Ruth Bingham, Jenny Brighton, and Jo Johnston, who all recorded top-100 finishes (placing 80th, 87th, and 98th respectively), while Linda Lawton marked her return to the road setting with 130th. In the men’s placings, an equivalent in-Club famous five comprised (in finishing order) Martin Hughes, Nick Johnston, David Ward, Pete Leach, and Dave Oram.
The third in the Series will be held from South Charnwood High School, in the guise of the Markfield 10km, on 13th February.
