Strong winds brought out strong performances from Harborough AC’s cross country squads at Shipley Country Park, Heanor. Niamh and Mollie Watson once again flew the flag for the under-17s, and the trio of Hal Eastwood, Amelia Lowe and Zoe Morgan-Williams moved the under-11 team into 6th. In the men’s race Adam Eales showed the results of consistent, committed training, following his 7th place at the Coombe 8 a week earlier with a sub-41 minutes clocking for 10km in what were atrocious conditions for racing. In the women’s 6km race Fiona Alexander took her second age-group win of the series, while Martha Clapp cemented her position in 2nd place in the under-20 league with one race left to go.
This came just two hours after she had secured the senior girls’ schools county championship in equally windy conditions at Brooksby, where Welland Park Academy teams dominated by HAC runners took the titles in both the junior boys’ and the junior girls’ events.
Club chairman Will Clapp commented, “The last three months have been an intense period of racing for some of our youngsters, competing for their schools as well as for the club. Training doesn’t stop, but at least they have some respite from racing until the new year, when it all gets going again with the county championships, where a number of our athletes will be going for medals or selection for their county teams. It’s also great to see the club continuing to be well represented at the Welland Park Parkrun, both volunteers and runners, with the most recent edition seeing ten of our members finishing in positions ranging from 1st to 103rd in the field of 124.”
