The Build Up

Juniors, veterans, indoors, on the road and cross country – Harborough Athletics Club members of all ages have been competing at a variety of events recently.

Eight junior runners were in action at the Ivanhoe Cross Country Challenge held at Market Bosworth. The under-13 girls (Bethany Wallis, Hannah Smith and Evie Anderson) were 3rd team in their 2.5 kilometre race, with Hannah Stewart producing the best individual result of the day – 2nd under-15 girl over 3.6 kilometres.

George Lowe represented the club in the trials to represent the East Midlands at the mini-marathon event held alongside the Virgin London Marathon held in April, finishing 16th in a respectable time of 19m20s over the three mile course in Leicester.

Karen Brooks got her indoor middle distance season underway at Lee Valley ahead of her trip to the World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon, USA in March. Brooks ran the fastest time in her age group over 800m last year, hence the invitation to compete on the global stage in a demonstration masters race held as part of the overall championships.

Days earlier Marie Taylor had also been in action at Lee Valley, coming back from injury to secure bronze in the British Masters WV50 Indoor Pentathlon Championships, setting a new personal best over the 60m hurdles and showing the positive effect of focused training by dramatically improving her previous best points total for the five disciplines (2,232 points compared to last year’s 1,995).
