Karen Brooks brought Harborough AC’s winter season to a glorious conclusion, competing successfully at the very highest level for Great Britain. No stranger to international competition Brooks, already double European Indoor Champion over 800 and 1500 metres, took a major step up when she was invited to compete in the masters 800 metres race held as part of the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Portland, Oregon, USA, where she rubbed shoulders with the global superstars of the sport. The demands of the scheduling meant that there were none of the heats which usually give athletes an opportunity to assess the opposition, but Brooks was untroubled, running brilliantly to secure an amazing bronze medal.

Chairman Will Clapp commented: “It’s a huge achievement for Karen to reach this level. She has always been a loyal club colleague and is an inspiration to us all. We’re very proud of her achievements and wish her and our other masters women all the best as they now head off to Ancona, Italy for the 2016 Masters European Indoor Championships”.

Meanwhile outside in the fields the UK’s cross country season reached its climax at the Inter-Counties Championships held at Cofton Park, Birmingham. Club stalwart Niamh Watson had been selected to represent Leicestershire in this prestigious event and finished 142nd in her first season at the under-17 level.
