Tuesday evening training is the main training session of the week for club seniors.
Members meet at Market Harborough Rugby Union Football Club from 6.45 pm ready to start training at 7pm. This provides an opportunity to socialise as a club before training starts and runners break into their groups.
There are several training groups all led by qualified coaches. Each group consists of runners with a roughly similar pace and include men and women as well different age groups. Group size varies.
Runners undertake a variety of different training sessions within their groups to improve fitness and performance. These may include:
- Steady runs – at the group pace between 45-60 minutes duration
- Interval sessions – running at a faster pace (for example for 60 seconds, 3 minutes etc), recovering for a similar period and repeating the intervals for a set number of times
- Hill repetitions – hard runs up different lengths of hill, recovering by jogging downhill and repeating a set number of times
- Threshold runs – running close to race pace for all or a significant part of the session
- Fartlek sessions – alternating shorter and longer fast bursts with easy running
- Cross country runs – running across local fields and designated footpaths
Sessions take place on the road/pavement and where possible on grass depending on the time of year and weather.
Training sessions usually start at an easier pace to “warm up” and end at a similar pace to “warm down”. For some sessions such as intervals the “warm up” will usually include some exercises to prepare you for faster running as well.
We encourage movement between groups if you wish. This might be as your pace and fitness increase or if want a lighter training load than usual if recovering from illness or injury.
Tuesday training finishes at approximately 8pm with a return to the club base.
Saturday training takes place at Corby Track in summer or East Carlton Country park in winter allow for different training environments and technical training for example sprinting, interval running, throwing and jumping. Sessions are coach led.
