Busy weekend for Harborough Athletic runners

It was a busy weekend for our runners across a range of cross country and road events.

10 of our runners competed in the iconic English National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill in London on Saturday 26th February. The standout performances were amongst the junior athletes with Jospeh O’Connell finishing in an impressive 66th in the Junior Men 10k in a time of 36:55 and Beth Wallis finishing 73rd in the Junior Women 6k in 29:10. Another one of our juniors, Maddy Stevens competed in the Under 15 Girls over 4k finishing in 22:35 (placed 301). In the Senior Women’s 8k, Ursula Stevens finished in 42:58 (placed 520) and Hazel O’Connell in 43:13 (529). Lewis Parker led the way in the Senior Men 12k in a time of 1:09:19 (placed 1,614) followed by Graeme Rolfe 1:11:59 (1,761), Gary Wallis in 1:12:09 (1,768), Peter Attenborough in 1:20:47 (1,980) and Simon Poyton in 1:35:09 (2,069).

Closer to home on Saturday, club runners took on the punishing Belvoir Challenge following the tracks, byways and footpaths throughout the Vale of Belvoir. Bob Allsopp and Nick Osborne completed the 26.5 miles route in 4 hours 06:10 in 33rd place and 4:17:11 (42nd) respectively, whilst Rich Hudson finished the 15 mile route in 2:27:00 (58th), Carmel Perrin in 3:12:38 (232) and Dan Perrin in 3:12:39 (233).

Sunday 27th saw the first of this season’s Leicestershire Road Running League with the Stilton 7. Steve King achieved V55 Gold standard time of 46:51 (77th place overall) whilst Martin Nicholls achieved V60 Silver standard with a time of 54:02 (183). We were also represented at the Leicestershire Half Marathon held at Prestwold Hall with Keith Matthews finishing impressively in 62nd place in 1:24:42.
