Round Harborough Relay Reminder, Volunteers and Nev Brooks

The Round Harborough Relay returns on Tuesday 14 June starting at the Rugby Club at 7pm. It’s shaping up to be a great evening of summer running with teams of 6 competing for the Nev Brooks Memorial Trophy.

All the details can be found at https://harboroughac.co.uk/round-harborough-spring-relay/ and then you can go to ClubPal to book. Entry is free. The event will finish around 9pmand we are arranging burger, chips and drinks at the Club House to finish the evening off. The cost of the food will be approximately £5 per head payable on the night please.

Please note that there will be no club training that evening. If you’re unable to run but would like to volunteer please contact Graeme at gdcorolfe@aol.com

For those of us that didn’t know Nev Brooks personally, he was a dedicated member of the club from 1987 to 2018 and had a lifelong interest in sport, spending many years in gymnastics, cycling and athletics.

During his time with the club, alongside competing he undertook a coaching role as well as being on the committee. Whilst he never saw himself as a top athlete, his commitment was second to none as evidenced by his London Marathon time of three and a half hours. He loved running and competing and always particularly enjoyed the team competitions, an attribute he passed on to his wife, Karen and his children, Lianne and Adam.

When his friend, former chairman Bill Alexander died, Nev introduced a trophy in his memory for cross-country running – it went not to the fastest runner, but the person who showed the greatest commitment as Nev (and Bill) thought there should be recognition for the committed team person.

One of the races Nev particularly enjoyed was the Round Leicester Relay as it allowed everyone of whatever standard to be involved. In recent years, after the demise of the RLR, the club introduced its younger brother, the Round Harborough Relay. His family thought it most appropriate to introduce a trophy in Nev’s memory to go to the winning team. The Relay is fully inclusive and each team is likely to contain at least one person who otherwise would never expect to win anything.
